Duško
Gojković (also spelled as Dusko Goykovich, born
October 14, 1931, Jajce,
Yugoslavia,
now), Serbian jazz trumpeter and
composer. He studied in Belgrade Music
Academy from 1948 to 1953. He played trumpet in a number of jazz
Dixieland
bands and, though only 18 years of age, joined Big Band of Radio
Belgrade. After five years spent there he grew into a seasoned musician
and
decided to continue his career in West
Germany. In 1956 he recorded his first LP as a member of
Frankfurt All Stars band. Next four years he spent as a member of Krut
Edelhagen’s orchestra as a first trumpet. In these years he
played with
legends
such as Chet
Baker or Stan
Getz. In 1958 he performed at Newport Jazz Festival and drew much
attention
on both sides of the Ocean. In 1961 he was offered a scholarship for
the studies
of composing and arranging in Berklee. He took the offer and finished
the studies. After the studies he was invited by Canadian band
leader Maynard Ferguson to join his band. Gojković
performed as a second trumpet until the break of the band in 1964. His
work
with Ferguson boosted his reputation as an excellent big band musician
and an
outstanding soloist. Next he returned back to Europe, formed his sextet
and
in 1964 recorded his first album Swinging Macedonia, with music he
originally
composed inspired by the music of Balkans. The album is generally
considered to
be the cornerstone of Balkan Jazz. In the years to follow he played
with Miles Davis,
Dizzy
Gillespie, Gerry Mulligan, Sonny
Rollins, Duke Jordan, Slide
Hampton etc. In 1966 he continued his career in The Kenny Clarke-Francy
Boland
Big Band. In 1968 he settled in Munich and formed
his own big band with artists such as Rolf Ericsson and Frank St Peter
that lasted until 1976. In 1986 he managed to form another orchestra
with
which he performs to this day. His much awaited comeback came with the
1993
Soul Connection album that won him a broad acclaim. This was followed
with
album Bebop City. In 1996 he recorded the Soul Collection album again
but this
time with his own big band. Another great album came in 1997
– Balkan
Blue, a
double CD: first one a quintet with Italian sax player Gianni Basso
while the second one features orchestra
of the North German Radio (NDR) accompanied by the jazz rhythm section
and
Gojković as a soloist. His next album was In My Dreams (2001) recorded
with his
quartet. In 2003 Gojković opened a new chapter in his career
with his album Samba do Mar, in which he composes for the first time
inspired
by Latin music. In 2004 he performed on the 200th anniversary of modern
Serbian statehood, the
opportunity he used to gather in Belgrade international All Star Big
Bend with
whom he recorded A Handful of Soul CD. His last album Samba Tzigane
came out in 2006. Gojković celebrated his 75th birthday with a grand
concert in Belgrade.
During
his career Gojković built his own style recognizable for the
preciseness,
brilliance of his technique and warm sound in playing as well as
melodic tunes
in composing.DISCOGRAPHY (INCOMPLETELY!): Belgrade Blues / Dusko Goykovich (Radio-Tele Beograd) The Golden Eight / Kenny Clarke-Francy Bolard And Co. NOVA 1984. Multimedijalni projekat Bivstvovanja Arhelija Panonca za muzičare, magnetofonsku traku, naratora i slajdove u izvodjenju ansambla Ritual Nova (Stevan Kovač Tickmayer koautor; Vladimir Marko, Minik Šandor i Djordje Delibašić - saradnici) 1986. Sam snimam i produciram. 1986. Multimedijalni Koncert za muzičare, magnetofonsku traku, balerinu i slajdove u izvodjenju ansambla Ritual Nova (Veljko Nikolić Nik i Bora Janić - muzičari, Olja Kovačević - plesačica, Ivana Indjin - vizuelna rešenja). 1988.
1998. Postavljanje muzičkog projekta Damari… Ti u vremenu i van njega u izvodjenju ansambla Ritual Nova (Miloš Matić, Bogdan Ranković, Valentina Češnjevar, Florijan Balaž i Boris Kovač) 1999. 1999. 2000. Otpočinjem rad na projektu La Danza Apocalypsa Balcanica, koji predstavlja egzoterijski nivo bavljenja temom Srećan Čovek. Ansambl LaDaABa orchest u sastavu Miloš Matić, Bogdan Ranković, Goran Penić, Ištvan Čik, Olah Vince, Boris Kovač i ton majstor Marinko Vukmanović, u periodu 2000-2005. snimili su dva albuma i izveli više od stotinu puta muzičko scenski performans The Last Balkan Tango, an apocalyptic dance party, u većini Evropskih zemalja kao i u Japanu. 2000. Rad na predstavi Landscape of Memories. Režija Jadranka Andjelić, izvodjenje muzike na sceni Miloš Matić, Goran Penić, Boris Kovač, igraju Juan Loriente Zamora, Nekane Santamaria. 2001. Objavljen CD album The Last Balkan Tango u izvodjenju LaDaABa orchest a u izdanju disko kuće Piranha iz Berlina. 2003. Objavljen CD album Ballads at the End of Time u izvodjenju LaDaABa orchest a u izdanju disko kuće Piranha iz Berlina. On predstavlja drugi i završni rad u okviru projekta La Danza Apocalypsa Balcanica. 2004. Objavljen CD album DAMARI, You within and out of Time, u izvodjenju Ritual Nova ansambla, snimljen 1999-te godine a u izdanju Kachara, an author’s edition, tj. ediciji samog autora koja se odnosi na publikovanje radova na tzv ezoterijskom nivou delovanja. Objavljen CD album World after History, a Pannonian-Mediterreanen round trip, u izvodjenju La Campanella orkestra a u izdanju disko kuće Piranha iz Berlina. 2006. Rad na predstavi The King, the Cat and the Violin u produkciji Chiroka teatra iz Madjarske. Rad na predstavi NAHOD SIMEON, po tekstu Milene Marković, u režiji Tomi Janežiča i produkciji Srpskog Narodnog Pozorišta u Novom Sadu 2007. Objavljen CD Songs from the Garden of Loves and Graves u izvodjenju orkestra Voda teče, u produkciji SNP iz Novog Sada. DISCOGRAPHY:

MARIČIĆ www.vladimirmaricic.com |
Vladimir
Maricic
was born on January 26. 1965. in a town of Sabac (80 km from Belgrade),
where
he graduated primary music school and high school. His professional
career started in 1985, when he went to Belgrade and formed Artbop
Quartet with
tenorist Ljuba Paunic and drummer Miroslav Karlovic. After one year he
become member of “Lazar Tosic Quintet”, most famous
jazz
drummer in Serbia.
With this band he performed his first concerts abroad. In 1989 he went
to London (UK) and had cooperation with brazilian bassist Ricardo
Santos, and
drummer Mark Fletcher. After a year of performing in best known jazz
clubs
(606, jazz caffe) he recorded some material. When he came back
in Serbia, he recorded additional material with Serbian bassist Michael
Blam
and percussionist Nenad Jelic, and released it together as album
“Ornaments”
for domestic labels, “PGP RTB”. In 1998 he
performed, in trio, on his first international jazz festival,
“Zagreb Jazz
Fair”, with obvious success. In 1994 he
released his second album “Paganic Trilogy”. For
the first
time he mixed
Serbian traditional music with jazz. It was successful and it is in
music shops
until now. In 1998 he
released his third CD, “Ritual”, which was even
more
traditional, and less
jazz. In 2000. he
released soundtrack CD, from theater show “The
Pianist”,
with original
compositions, in quintet, with his trio and brass section of Belgrade
radio big
band. In 2001 he
released his fifth CD “Old Dreams & New
Friends”, with
famous jazz
musicians such as Mr. Alvin Queen – dr. and Mr. Reggie
Johnson
–bass. It was a jazz CD
with four originals and five jazz standards in original arrangements.
In 2003. he
released “Prelo”, for domestic label, “BK
Sound”. Prelo is latest, and
probably, most interesting CD. It is mixture of Serbian traditional
violin
music and jazz and latino music. On this CD, the cooperation was made
with the
best string orchestra in Serbia, “St. George String
Orchestra”. Traditional
musical ornaments were carefully merged with jazz lines all the way
including
solos. Violin lines were written in the same manner, since violin
tradition in
Serbia is deep and rich. Prelo in Serbian
language means village fire (in autumn, gathering people around fire,
roasting
young corns, making new friendships etc.). The idea was to make musical
“Prelo”
which will gather so different traditions around virtual fire, this CD.
The new cd
“Romano-Cubano” will be released in september 2005.

succesfully as artistic director of Sabac

| ARHAI www.arhai.com |
ARHAI
was
created in 1998. Its music embodies unique fusion of different genres:
ambient
sound and traditional music of the Balkans combined with elements of
jazz
improvisation. These elements are integrated through skillful
authorship of
Jovana Backovic, group's leader. She is the composer and arranger of
all pieces
that Arhai performs. Due to this specific fusion of sounds, Arhai's
music is
usually listed within the broad genre of world music. There are ten
musicians
playing in Arhai. Classical flute, violoncello and piano together bring
the
ambiental quality of sound, while percussions, drums, electric and bass
guitar
modernize the music that was purely acoustic in the beginning. Beside
Jovana,
there are also tree female vocals, whose style of singing represents
sound of
Balkans' tradition in Arhai's music. So - this specific mixture of
genres and
instrument's colors is, among other things, what makes Arhai tribe
unique. Musicians
have different backgrounds and experiences (classical music, jazz
&
blues,
traditional music ), but their different approaches to music and
balance
between them is exactly that what inspires author's music.DISCOGRAPHY:

I
proudly present to you one of the best
Romany ensembles in the Balkans. Olah Vince and his Earth –
Wheel
- Sky Band
are legitimate representatives of the new urban cultural Romany scene,
which
presents its own musical and cultural heritage through world music.
After
publishing two albums for foreign labels, taking part in the most
eminent ethno
and jazz festivals, and after their European and World tour within
which they
visited France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Holland, Japan, Austria,
Hungary,
Slovakia, Slovenia, and Croatia, the time has come for the audience in
our
country to get to know their discography. To start with, it is enough
to say
that Mr. Olah has dedicated his entire life to the struggle for his
people’s
cultural, social, and political rights. The
“modern” people
would say that the
man is an expert but. I like more to think of him as Romany Bob Marley
or to
compare him to Manu Chao. Time will tell best to what extent he
succeeded in
that. The music on this compact disc bears only one message. The time
has come
for you to learn about the other side of the story about Romanies. From
themselves. The promotion and (ab)use of the Roman culture has becomea major trend in the world in the last few years. The irony of the historic moment has proven itself explicit this way: the people that represent the symbol of a-historic principle have come into focus of attention at the exact time when the unstoppable historic (technological/economic) progress got out of hand. You can draw conclusion yourself... Vince Olah, the living legend of the Novi Sad music scene, has dedicated his whole life to the cultural, social and political emancipation of the Romany people. The project RROMA ART is an attempt to find a unique matrix in the vast range of Romany music which will make its creators, who have been discriminated and spread all over the world, awere of their Romany identity. Trust your heart, at least for a moment, for we are all Romany at heart... (Boris Kovač). DISCOGRAPHY:

Kal
(black in Romani) plays
contemporary
Romany music based on traditional melodies. Two-quarter beat is typical
of this
band, while violins and accordions are the dominant instruments. In the
1970s,
Romany music was very popular in the area surrounding the town of
Valjevo and
the most prominent musician coming from this region is certainly
Duško
Petrović. Based in Valjevo, Kal was established in 1996 by the Ristić
brothers, Dragan
and Dušan. Dragan Ristić graduated from the Faculty of
Dramatic
Arts in
Belgrade, while Dušan graduated from the Faculty of Applied
Arts. After the release of their album, Balkan Ambience, on the Komuna
label, German
record label United One included one of their songs on its 1998
compilation,
which featured two other bands: Louise Attaque from France and Muszikas
from
Hungary.Kal performed several times in Hungary with famous
Hungarian Romany
bands Kali Yag, Ando Drom and Ternipe, as well as at the Pepsi Sziget
Festival.
In October 1999, together with two other bands, they toured Germany,
Hungary
and the Check Republic. In the summer of 2002, they took part in the
festival
"La notte di San Lorenzo" in Milan.
The latest CD by Kal features traditional Romany folk music played on
acoustic
instruments only. They revive an earlier style of Romany music, which
existed
before the era of electric instruments, at the time when acoustic style
was the
only way of playing music. Their performance combines diverse
influences:
Serbian, Walachian, and Macedonian.DISCOGRAPHY:

| BELO PLATNO (WHITE
LINEN)
beloplatno.rastko.net |
White
linen is a frequent motive in Serbian folk songs. As a
symbol of purity, white linen follows a man through life: at birth, he
is
swaddled in it; at his baptism – wrapped in it; at his
wedding – bound by it;
as a wedding guest – presented with it; during his life he
wears it, and is
finally shrouded in it. Musical origins of Belo Platno can be found in
Balkan folk
music and in Byzantine church music. The main characteristics of the
music of Belo Platno are the
Balkan modal style, striking female voices and the playing of authentic
traditional instruments. The modal style consists of singing and
playing
according to modes ([1] maqam – in the East, echos
– in Byzantine church
music, raga – in Indian and dastgah – in
Persian classical music). The musical arrangements for group
performances are based
on field and other sound recordings. The songs are sung in local slavic
dialects. The group Belo Platno was founded in Belgrade
(Serbia)
in 1997 through the engagement and effort of people brought together by
their
love for folk culture and joint need to preserve and bring back to
life,
through songs and playing. Belo Platno represents a joining of good
instrumentalists
and singers that perceive traditional music as an endless source of
inspiration
for the discovery of personal and contemporary musical expression.
New CD of the group, a third one, is being prepared.DISCOGRAPHY:

| BALKAN MUSIC COMPANY
BY MILOŠ PETROVIĆ & PAPA NICK solair.eunet.yu/~dingo/index.htm |
BALKAN
MUSIC COMPANY is the name for the institution created
by Milos Petrovic and Papa Nick, to be the root of the production
center of
music and the way of life, aproximately named balkanian, levantian or
mediteranian.Considering music, this means that music wich is played,
composed or improvised, should be under the influences of cultures and
peoples
that Byzantian imperium rulled or left it’s inprint directly
or
indirectly.
This is covering whole Mediteran from Portugal
to Palestine,
Frome Venice to Lybia, as well as the countries and peoples around it.
Exept of this, influence (not predominant) should exist of
all other cultures (especialy tradiotionaly ethnical) and, of corse,
influences
and expiriences of classical, modern, avangarde and jazz music.
This is
very vide, but not undeterminated concept atop
wich stands enormous and genuine quality of Byzantian culture and
spirit, with
all of its richnes and splendor. Versatile activities of Miloš Petrovic as performing artist (piano, harpsichord, chamber music), and a composer (electro-acoustic music, multi-media works and jazz compositions) have significantly distinguished him among the contemporary Yugoslav music artist of jounger generation. He graduated piano in 1974, at the Piano Department, Faculty of Music in Belgrade, and acquired M. Mus degree in 1988 at the harpsichord Department in the class of Prof. Olivera Djurdjevich. At the time, he is the Professor and teaches harpsichord and chamber music at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade. His work as a composer, consist among the other things, cycle "History of Byzantium" 1-2. Speciality of this project is the authors approach to folk music of the different nations that had lived under Byzantine Empire, such as: Greeks, Armenians, Serbs, Arabs, etc. As a jazz pianist, he had the performances in Germany, France, Hungary and Greece. Veljko Nikolic "Papa Nick" - percussions and vocal in 1974, he founded the experimental group " Institute " together with Sai Fraparega, promoting "Neo Neo Fluxus" (Music, Arts and Everything). Since 1980 intensive work with various groups in Belgrade. In 1988 he played with Lamine Konte. "Papa Nick" is a graduated architect, and shows big interest in African music. The
music band VROOOM was founded in March 1997 and started
its career through live performances in Belgrade
clubs. From the very beginning the band created under the influence of
Balkan
folk melodies, cabaret music and contemporary rhythms of western
popular music
(techno, drum'n'bass, trip-hop, etc.). All these genres are united
through a
specific sound marked by two vocals, guitar, accordion, fretted and
fretless
bass, sampling, electronic and acoustic drums and percussion. The band
got a
wider affirmation by working within THE TORPEDO THEATRE COMPANY where,
in
performances OVERLAPPING, ANIMAL FARM, and ETHNO CIRCUS, VROOOM played
their
music live. During 1998 and 1999, VROOOM toured, as a music component
of THE
TORPEDO THEATRE COMPANY or as an independent band, the following
places:
Switzerland, Slovenia, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia,
Romania,
Bulgaria, and Yugoslavia, where they participated in most significant
music and
theatre festivals (INFANT, BELEF, BITEF, Budva - Theatre City Festival,
etc.). In 1999, the album TORPEDO MUSIC was produced by the band
itself. It is a collection of compositions created for plays for THE
TORPEDO
THEATRE COMPANY and plays for several institutional theatres. Music
from this
CD was used in a movie BELGRADE TOURIST GUIDE 2000, which was awarded
the
Belgrade Golden Medallion as the best Yugoslav short film in 2000 and
the
Golden Orange at the Antalia film festival. The same year VROOOM
recorded a new studio album comprising
songs from their concert repertory named VENTILATION (issued by the
Felix
Records) as well as a live album, Live in Zurich,
sponsored by the Swiss embassy in Belgrade
and Zuercher Theater Spektackel. In 2001, VENTILATION reached the
stores and
the album singles Tamni vilajet (Dark Cave), Kao Adam u rano jutro
(Like Adam
in the Early Morning), and a cover of Blondie's Heart of Glass all did
well on
the important top 10 singles charts in Serbia and Montenegro. The album
promotion started with VROOOM's live appearance on the opening of the
Belgrade film festival,
FEST 2001. In the next two years the band plays all across Serbia and
Montenegro
and on most of the important festivals at home and abroad
(Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy,
France, Switzerland). As well as working on applied music (theatre
plays: Danton's
Death, The Last Death of Frenky the Teardrop, Talking It Over, The
Characters,
The Travellers, The Teeth, The Safe House, Who Do You Trust?, School);
documentary
film: Pepparkakslandet; sporting events: The World Fina Cup and
Tasmajdan
trophy waterpolo tournaments, Diamond Ball international basketball
tournament), in 2003 the group started working on the new album,
announcing it
with a cover version of Sarlo akrobata classic, Problem (issued on a
V.A.
compilation Kao da je bilo nekad), and with new videos for the new
album
singles Undersense and Awakening which reached No. 1 on almost
all
the
important top 10 video clip charts in Serbia and Montenegro. In March
2005, the
new album EVOLUTION was released by Automatic/Mascom (Nika records for
Slovenia,
Menart for Crotia). Album promotion was devised though concerts
followed by a
projection of a series of animated videos with the subject Evolution -
a
process of constant changes of unquestionable durability and dubious
cause.
The single Missreality was the most frequently played
Serbian song on the MTV Adria in 2005 and the video Malo
vremena
(A Little
Bit of Time) spent over ten weeks on MTV Adria's Top 20 list (it
reached No. 1
several times thanks to the spectators' votes). The year 2006 was
marked by
another success for the band - Vrooom was awarded the band of the year
title (TV

| ŠABAN
BAJRAMOVIĆ www.sabanbajramovic.com |
As with every Gypsy, stories and legends
abound about Saban, and, as in other cases, it is not clear what is
true and
what is not. There are, unfortunately, no books existing on Saban or at
least
none readily available. Saban has no agents and no marketing
strategists with
media attitude, he has no written PR texts and has no homepage on the
Internet. Even before the
winds of war began to
blow
through the Balkans, it was difficult to track him down -- now it is
practically impossible. It is widely held that even the well informed
connoisseurs of Romany culture and Gypsy music are unable to provide
accurate
information about him. In spite of this, however, it is obvious to
everyone
that the greatest among the equally great of them all is none other
than Saban
Bajramovic. It is believed he
was born on April
16, 1936
in Nis, Yugoslavia. He attended primary school for only four years. On
quitting
school, he picked up his musical education practically, on the street
and
wherever he could, as others of his people have always done. At 19 he ran away from the army out of love
for a girl. As a deserter, he was sentenced to three years prison on
the island
Goli Otok. But he told the military court they couldn't hold him for so
long,
and they raised his punishment to five and a half years. He survived
partly
because he was a good goalkeeper on the prison football team. Because
of his
nimbleness and speed, they called him "Black Panther." Soon he forced
his way into the prison orchestra that played, among other things, jazz
(mostly
Armstrong, Sinatra, and even John Coltrane) with Spanish and Mexican
pieces.
Today he likes to say that he read 20,000 books in his life, most of
them
whilst in prison. He also says that the prison on Goli Otok was his
university
of life where he formed his philosophy, adding that a person who has
never been
in prison is not a person at all.
After Goli
Otok, his intensive music career
began. He made his first record in 1964 and since then has made 15 to
20 LPs
and about 50 singles. To date he is supposed to have composed 650
compositions.
With his first major earnings, he bought a white Mercedes and hired two
bodyguards. The story says that he soon lost his Mercedes gambling, and
it
seems Saban is still fond of a dice. The girl that caused him to go to
Goli
Otok did not wait for him. He can't say himself how many times he has
been
married since his return from the prison, and God alone knows how many
children
he has fathered throughout the Balkans.
For 20
years he had his own group called Black
Mamba that toured half the world. They played real music or, as Saban
says,
"more than music." Nehru and Indira Ghandi invited him to India,
where they proclaimed him the world king of Gypsy music. Legend also
has it
that gypsies respect and love Tito the most, Saban second and then,
after ten
empty places, once again Saban.
From those times
there exist famous pictures
of Saban posing alone or with his Mambas in white clothes like some
kind of
Balkan mutant, a cross between Tito and Elvis, but with muddy shoes and
a
bottle of spirit in his inside pocket. His dark, scarred face was set
off by a
set of gold and diamond teeth, set wide apart, and his native,
bitter-sweet
Gypsy smile that tells all and nothing, ringed by a thin stylish
moustache
(such as that worn by Little Richard or Screamin' Jay Hawkins). Hidden
behind
the scarred face and deep, hoarse voice lies an absolute ear for music
and real
Gypsy soul. He latter changed his brilliant teeth — he
thought
they reacted
with the alcohol and caused a painful jaw — just as he
changed
his groups,
styles, wives, children, cars. His moustache thickened and lost some of
its
glamour, but his voice, ear for music and real Gypsy soul remains
unchanged. Today it is very
difficult task to
trace Saban
Bajramovic. Officially he still lives in Nis, but he has often been
seen a café
owned by Mujo Bosanac in Vienna where at weekends he raises emotions
and
flatters the guests. You can
also find him in
the films Sunday
Lunch and Guardian Angel by G. Paskaljevic and Kusturica's films, and
in the
works of many musicians who have been directly inspired by him and have
taken
his themes and melodies, among them the once and now again famous Goran
Bregovic. DISCOGRAPHY (Period 2001-2006):

For
over ten years SVETI has been the creative outlet for
one of the most impressive and innovative drummers in the world today,
the
Yugoslav-born Marko Djordjevic. As the composer
for SVETI, Marko writes music inspired by his Balkan roots, enriched by
the
“western” artists that have influenced him, from
Weather
Report to the Police;
Zappa to Coltrane; Mahavishnu to Ani DiFranco.
The best description of SVETI’s sound came from a first-time
audience
member who remarked, “You guys are like a jam band, except
you
have great
melodies and you can all play the hell out of your
instruments!”
The list of people who have lent their talents to SVETI over
the years reads like a who is who of contemporary music: keyboradists
Vasil
Hadzimanov, Marc Ziegenhagen, and Pete Rende, bass players Johnny Sjo,
Matt
Garrison, Janek Gwizdala, vocalists Holly Palmer, Clara Lofaro,
guitarists Bato
Andonov, Wayne Krantz, Rick Peckham, sax players Jeff Ellwood, Chris
Cheek, Bob
Reynolds and trumpet players Rossen Zahariev and Brad Mason. The
evolution of
the group’s sound is documented on two Benito Records
releases,
the self-titled
debut, SVETI, and the 2001 follow up, Live Kolach. Today, the
instrumentation of the group consists of upright
bass, bass trumpet, tenor saxophone and drums, played by some of the
finest
musicians on the planet! Eli DeGibri (tenor saxophone, Israel) was a
member of the
legendary piano player Herbie Hancock’s group for two years,
including a world
tour and an album and DVD available worldwide.
He is currently a mainstay with the Charles Mingus Big Band as well as
a
member of Al Foster’s group. Eli’s huge sound is
second to
none and his solos
take a listener on a journey-sometimes a slow dirge cruise, sometimes a
super-sonic joy ride. Elliot Mason (valve trombone, England), a child
prodigy, began
playing professionally at the age of 11. Today, at 26, simply
put, he is one of the
best trombone players of our time. Elliot has performed with the Count
Basie
Orchestra, Joe Zawinul, Airto, Slide Hampton, Natalie Cole, and many
others. Matt Pavolka (upright bass, U.S.A.) has performed with Kurt
Rosenwinkel, Seamus Blake, Jeff Ballard, and Mark Turner, among
others. Matt is an upright player equally at home as
an accompanist and soloist, a rare find even at the highest level of
musicianship. Curiously, Matt and Marko
share the same birthday (Matt being 6 hours older). Born on
two
different continents, they truly
represent what SVETI is about: a coming together of peers from
different
corners of the world, in an effort to create something
beautiful. DISCOGRAPHY:

Duško
Gojković (also spelled as Dusko Goykovich, born
October 14, 1931, Jajce,
Yugoslavia,
now), Serbian jazz trumpeter and
composer. He studied in Belgrade Music
Academy from 1948 to 1953. He played trumpet in a number of jazz
Dixieland
bands and, though only 18 years of age, joined Big Band of Radio
Belgrade. After five years spent there he grew into a seasoned musician
and
decided to continue his career in West
Germany. In 1956 he recorded his first LP as a member of
Frankfurt All Stars band. Next four years he spent as a member of Krut
Edelhagen’s orchestra as a first trumpet. In these years he
played with
legends
such as Chet
Baker or Stan
Getz. In 1958 he performed at Newport Jazz Festival and drew much
attention
on both sides of the Ocean. In 1961 he was offered a scholarship for
the studies
of composing and arranging in Berklee. He took the offer and finished
the studies. After the studies he was invited by Canadian band
leader Maynard Ferguson to join his band. Gojković
performed as a second trumpet until the break of the band in 1964. His
work
with Ferguson boosted his reputation as an excellent big band musician
and an
outstanding soloist. Next he returned back to Europe, formed his sextet
and
in 1964 recorded his first album Swinging Macedonia, with music he
originally
composed inspired by the music of Balkans. The album is generally
considered to
be the cornerstone of Balkan Jazz. In the years to follow he played
with Miles Davis,
Dizzy
Gillespie, Gerry Mulligan, Sonny
Rollins, Duke Jordan, Slide
Hampton etc. In 1966 he continued his career in The Kenny Clarke-Francy
Boland
Big Band. In 1968 he settled in Munich and formed
his own big band with artists such as Rolf Ericsson and Frank St Peter
that lasted until 1976. In 1986 he managed to form another orchestra
with
which he performs to this day. His much awaited comeback came with the
1993
Soul Connection album that won him a broad acclaim. This was followed
with
album Bebop City. In 1996 he recorded the Soul Collection album again
but this
time with his own big band. Another great album came in 1997
– Balkan
Blue, a
double CD: first one a quintet with Italian sax player Gianni Basso
while the second one features orchestra
of the North German Radio (NDR) accompanied by the jazz rhythm section
and
Gojković as a soloist. His next album was In My Dreams (2001) recorded
with his
quartet. In 2003 Gojković opened a new chapter in his career
with his album Samba do Mar, in which he composes for the first time
inspired
by Latin music. In 2004 he performed on the 200th anniversary of modern
Serbian statehood, the
opportunity he used to gather in Belgrade international All Star Big
Bend with
whom he recorded A Handful of Soul CD. His last album Samba Tzigane
came out in 2006. Gojković celebrated his 75th birthday with a grand
concert in Belgrade.
During
his career Gojković built his own style recognizable for the
preciseness,
brilliance of his technique and warm sound in playing as well as
melodic tunes
in composing.

1996 he moves back to Yugoslavia. By leading his RITUAL NOVA ensemble,
LaDaABa orchest, La Campanella orchestra, Chamber Theatre of Music
OGLEDALO, Academy of Fine Skills and working with students he is also
trying to reestablish the contemporary music/theatre scene in his
country. He has performed his works in a few hundred concerts and more
the 200 festivals of new music and contemporary theater in
around
30 countries on 4 continents.

Vladimir
Maricic
was born on January 26. 1965. in a town of Sabac (80 km from Belgrade),
where
he graduated primary music school and high school. His professional
career started in 1985, when he went to Belgrade and formed Artbop
Quartet with
tenorist Ljuba Paunic and drummer Miroslav Karlovic. After one year he
become member of “Lazar Tosic Quintet”, most famous
jazz
drummer in Serbia.
With this band he performed his first concerts abroad. In 1989 he went
to London (UK) and had cooperation with brazilian bassist Ricardo
Santos, and
drummer Mark Fletcher. After a year of performing in best known jazz
clubs
(606, jazz caffe) he recorded some material. When he came back
in Serbia, he recorded additional material with Serbian bassist Michael
Blam
and percussionist Nenad Jelic, and released it together as album
“Ornaments”
for domestic labels, “PGP RTB”. In 1998 he
performed, in trio, on his first international jazz festival,
“Zagreb Jazz
Fair”, with obvious success. In 1994 he
released his second album “Paganic Trilogy”. For
the first
time he mixed
Serbian traditional music with jazz. It was successful and it is in
music shops
until now. In 1998 he
released his third CD, “Ritual”, which was even
more
traditional, and less
jazz. In 2000. he
released soundtrack CD, from theater show “The
Pianist”,
with original
compositions, in quintet, with his trio and brass section of Belgrade
radio big
band. In 2001 he
released his fifth CD “Old Dreams & New
Friends”, with
famous jazz
musicians such as Mr. Alvin Queen – dr. and Mr. Reggie
Johnson
–bass. It was a jazz CD
with four originals and five jazz standards in original arrangements.
In 2003. he
released “Prelo”, for domestic label, “BK
Sound”. Prelo is latest, and
probably, most interesting CD. It is mixture of Serbian traditional
violin
music and jazz and latino music. On this CD, the cooperation was made
with the
best string orchestra in Serbia, “St. George String
Orchestra”. Traditional
musical ornaments were carefully merged with jazz lines all the way
including
solos. Violin lines were written in the same manner, since violin
tradition in
Serbia is deep and rich. Prelo in Serbian
language means village fire (in autumn, gathering people around fire,
roasting
young corns, making new friendships etc.). The idea was to make musical
“Prelo”
which will gather so different traditions around virtual fire, this CD.
The new cd
“Romano-Cubano” will be released in september 2005.

Maricic works
succesfully as artistic director of Sabac
International Blues & Jazz Festival since 1993. In past 10
years,

ARHAI
was
created in 1998. Its music embodies unique fusion of different genres:
ambient
sound and traditional music of the Balkans combined with elements of
jazz
improvisation. These elements are integrated through skillful
authorship of
Jovana Backovic, group's leader. She is the composer and arranger of
all pieces
that Arhai performs. Due to this specific fusion of sounds, Arhai's
music is
usually listed within the broad genre of world music. There are ten
musicians
playing in Arhai. Classical flute, violoncello and piano together bring
the
ambiental quality of sound, while percussions, drums, electric and bass
guitar
modernize the music that was purely acoustic in the beginning. Beside
Jovana,
there are also tree female vocals, whose style of singing represents
sound of
Balkans' tradition in Arhai's music. So - this specific mixture of
genres and
instrument's colors is, among other things, what makes Arhai tribe
unique. Musicians
have different backgrounds and experiences (classical music, jazz
&
blues,
traditional music ), but their different approaches to music and
balance
between them is exactly that what inspires author's music.
Jovan Maljoković is a famous Belgrade
saxophone player, composer and
arranger. His Balkan Salsa Band has existed for almost fifteen years,
representing Serbia at many
festivals throughout Europe and Cuba.
In the last years they have performed at Rottweil Jazz Festival
(Germany), Festivals of Cultures in Luxemburg and
Vienna, Django
Reinhardt International Jazz Festival in Samois, Montreux Jazz Festival
etc.
Jovan Maljoković Balkan Salsa Band has performed in Athens,
representing Serbia
at the Olympic Games 2004. Maljoković is the founder and art director
of one of
the most important festivals in Serbia
„Valjevo Jazz Fest”. This festival is known for
hosting top domestic jazz
artists. From the very beginning, as a composer, arranger and player,
Maljoković
has used Balkan folk music for his jazz compositions. „Ethno
music is a
precious way of communication among various cultures. It is an
opportunity for
people all over the world to understand one another music better. As
every
region has its special cuisine, it also has its special musical
salsa.”, said
Maljoković in an interview

I
proudly present to you one of the best
From
themselves.

Kal
(black in Romani) plays
contemporary
Romany music based on traditional melodies. Two-quarter beat is typical
of this
band, while violins and accordions are the dominant instruments. In the
1970s,
Romany music was very popular in the area surrounding the town of
Valjevo and
the most prominent musician coming from this region is certainly
Duško
Petrović. Based in Valjevo, Kal was established in 1996 by the Ristić
brothers, Dragan
and Dušan. Dragan Ristić graduated from the Faculty of
Dramatic
Arts in
Belgrade, while Dušan graduated from the Faculty of Applied
Arts. After the release of their album, Balkan Ambience, on the Komuna
label, German
record label United One included one of their songs on its 1998
compilation,
which featured two other bands: Louise Attaque from France and Muszikas
from
Hungary.
For the first time, the serbian audience met
the
real salsa sound in the time, when the band Son Cuba Son started with
their
performances in Belgrade. Son Cuba Son were founded by the good people,
by the
best cubans musicians and the dance instructors, temporary working in
Serbia.
Besides virtually dancing, they are singing as born with the rhythm in
their
bodies. Son Cuba Son today are club atraction in Serbia.

ethno-music, with hungarian and balkanic folk elements, sensitive and
motivated
for dance. Consisted of young and talented Hungarians and Serbs, the
band has
started in 2003. with sofisticated and dynamic music, exspressing life
energy
of hungarians and balkanic themes, presenting some kind of
revelation of the serbian World Music scene.
Multinational and multicultural characteristics are the main parts and
specific
way of their music exspression. Their compositions are full of
improvisations
which were based on sounds of violin.
White
linen is a frequent motive in Serbian folk songs. As a
symbol of purity, white linen follows a man through life: at birth, he
is
swaddled in it; at his baptism – wrapped in it; at his
wedding – bound by it;
as a wedding guest – presented with it; during his life he
wears it, and is
finally shrouded in it. Musical origins of Belo Platno can be found in
Balkan folk
music and in Byzantine church music. The main characteristics of the
music of Belo Platno are the
Balkan modal style, striking female voices and the playing of authentic
traditional instruments. The modal style consists of singing and
playing
according to modes ([1] maqam – in the East, echos
– in Byzantine church
music, raga – in Indian and dastgah – in
Persian classical music). The musical arrangements for group
performances are based
on field and other sound recordings. The songs are sung in local slavic
dialects. The group Belo Platno was founded in Belgrade
(Serbia)
in 1997 through the engagement and effort of people brought together by
their
love for folk culture and joint need to preserve and bring back to
life,
through songs and playing. Belo Platno represents a joining of good
instrumentalists
and singers that perceive traditional music as an endless source of
inspiration
for the discovery of personal and contemporary musical expression.
New CD of the group, a third one, is being prepared.

very vide, but not undeterminated concept atop

all of its richnes and splendor.

This
music endeavor takes the ancient musical
heritage of Balkans to electronic vibe of 21 Century without
sacrificing live,
human side of performed music. Antique string instruments and ethnical
vocals
are layered together with modern beats and synthesized sounds creating
this
unique sonic mixture.
In
their January 1997 issue, the editors of GUITAR PLAYER
magazine voted Miroslav Tadic one of the world's thirty most radical

The
music band VROOOM was founded in March 1997 and started
its career through live performances in Belgrade
Death, The Last Death of Frenky the Teardrop, Talking It Over, The
Characters,
The Travellers, The Teeth, The Safe House, Who Do You Trust?, School);
documentary
film: Pepparkakslandet; sporting events: The World Fina Cup and
Tasmajdan
trophy waterpolo tournaments, Diamond Ball international basketball
tournament), in 2003 the group started working on the new album,
announcing it
with a cover version of Sarlo akrobata classic, Problem (issued on a
V.A.
compilation Kao da je bilo nekad), and with new videos for the new
album
singles Undersense and Awakening which reached No. 1 on almost
all
the
important top 10 video clip charts in Serbia and Montenegro. In March
2005, the
new album EVOLUTION was released by Automatic/Mascom (Nika records for
Slovenia,
Menart for Crotia).
The year 2006 was
marked by
another success for the band - Vrooom was awarded the band of the year
title (TV
Metropolis).
